Welcome to our Summer Programme.

REEL Life - St Anne’s Film Club

Into the Wild

Thursday 17th July 2008 at the Vicarage @ 7.00pm

Chris and Carine are the children of business partners Walt and Billie McCandless, a couple more successful in their careers than in their volatile relationship. Chris, an extrovert but deep thinking student, has been alienated by their fights, their materialism and a family discovery he has made. After graduation, he writes a cheque to Oxfam for most of his remaining college fund and sets off on a road trip, breaking off contact with the family.

Chris’s story is ultimately tragic, but along the way, he meets, learns from and often inspires an assortment of people battling their own demons, a few people of faith, and the odd likeable rogue.

This is a long film  (142 mins) - so we will be looking at clips rather than the whole film. If you want to borrow the film to see the whole film before, please ask.

Want to know more……talk about it….. ask questions about the themes it raises… wonder what the Christian faith might say about those theme…then come along.

We invite a donation - there will be food and nibbles.

People who remember Sale some time back will recall the Odeon and Savoy cinemas and even more mature people will recall a cinema up in Sale Moor. Then along came TV and later video and cinema-going plunged. But now, go to Altrincham, the Trafford Centre, Manchester and you will fine endless screens showing countless films around the clock (almost).

We live in a visual age. Although we buy, as a nation, lots of books, visual imagery catches our imagination. That is why we watch TV and that is certainly why we watch films - a story, a theme, an idea, is offered to us in a reasonable time-scale and we come away satisfied, filled up with images, conversations, sounds.

The Bible Society, along with many others, has noted that film can invite us to think about important ideas that affect our lives. Christians can bring faith and belief to their watching of a film.

We are going to start a Film Club. Here’s the deal.

*      This will be monthly, on the third Thursday of each month.

*      The Law says that it has to be shown on domestic property (ie not the Church Hall without a very expensive license) so we will start at the Vicarage.

*      We will begin at 7.00pm sharp (no Pearl and Dean; no forthcoming attractions; no popcorn).

*      We will provide finger food and drinks and donations to cover these (and future film purchases) will be welcome.

*      When the film is over (most take usually 90 - 120 minutes) we will take some of the Bible Society’s suggested themes and wrestle with them.

*      If you wish to come, please sign up, each month. There is clearly limited space so first come, first served rules will have to apply.

What if there are lots of would-be film watchers? I will have the DVD, the material from the Bible Society and “instructions” for leading a group. It would be great for others to run such a group.
